Marmaris - Datca Peninsula: Weather Forecast

The weather on the Marmaris-Datca Peninsula belongs to the subtropical climate type. Mild winters, long warm and sunny summers, with some instability during the changing of the seasons from winter to spring and from autumn to winter. A special feature of the weather in the region is it has a very low humidity rate, due to an almost constant breeze. Precipitation is very low and falls almost entirely throughout the winter.months Snow is very rare, and when falling, it melts immediately. Actually, all year round you can spend a lot of time outside in nature, making the region a paradise for all kinds of outdoor activities all year through. And due to seasonal differences there may be a preferable weather type for every single traveller. This may be the reason that Homer wrote: If the Gods wish a person a long life they send him or her to the Peninsula of Cnidos (nowadays Marmaris-Datca).

The yearly weather cycle on the Marmaris-Datca Peninsula makes the area really fit to all kinds of travel and activities.

The pattern is generally as follows: hot, dry summers and mild winters with early spring and late fall being unstable, it which may rain or bright, with some days of storm and heavy rains. Around the last week of May, beautiful and stable sunny weather begins. Temperatures are gradually rising from about 20°C  to about 35°C by the end of August. From then on temperatures slowly drop, till they reach the mild winter temperatures of about 14°C again.

Seawater temperatures follow the overall weather pattern, but lack behind with almost a season. One main reason is that at almost every beach, ice cold mountain- and spring water flows through small subterranean canals into the sea. So in the springtime, the seawater is still cold, while in autumn it is fairly warm.

Winter is the ideal season for travellers who like outdoor activities without being bothered  by climatic influences. If you wear long-sleeved clothes and take a wind or rain jacket with you, you're perfectly protected against the weather and thorny bushes along your paths. Winter may be too cold for most travellers to camp and prepare food in the open air. But warm clothes and a good sleeping bag can again protect you against any climatic discomforts. A special feature of winter is the blossoming of the almond trees, an incredible sight at the end of January and the beginning of February!

Spring is the ideal season for outdoor activity lovers who like to sunbathe in the heat of the day and take a cool dive in sparkling blue waters of the untouched beaches of Mamaris. Spring is an ideal period for trekking -whether walking or biking- in the mornings, a long lunchbreak and then a hike again till sunset. The natural beauty is at its peak with all kinds of scents and colourful blossoms of plants and trees.

Summer is the ideal season for all travellers who like watersports and beach activities. Even for trekking and walking there are good opportunities on the peninsula. There are a lot of forested areas and the mountain range from Datca to Cnidos is ideal for cool trekkings even in the summer. Early in the morning, i.e. at around 03.30 - 8.30 am is a fantastic time for walking at lower altitudes. At the heat of day, you're preparing your lunch in a shady place in the  forest or on a quiet beach. Later that day you have a second period of  2-3 hours for walking. Camping -even without tents- but with a good sleeping bag is often more ideal than overnights in an hotel or pension. (Note: please be careful with fire!! Thank you).

Autumn is the season for swimming, snorkeling and diving in beautiful bays. The seawater has reached its highest temperature, and the soil is dry. Everywhere you look you can see the yellow and golden colours of shrubs and grasses and above them the evergreen leaves of the olive and carob trees.  An ideal season for walking or mountain biking through the calm region after the core of tourists and travellers have left.

As you see, outdoor activities can be practised all year through. Depending on your travelling schedule and your personal preferences, you can easily make a choice for a stay at The Marmaris Datca Peninsula. Of course, every possibility has not been summed up in the above descriptions. For example, we have not yet mentioned any motorized outdoor activity.The region is also ideal for horseriding, for motorcycle tours, off-road treks, or for countryside drives by car, and so on.

The annual agricultural calendar  at the Marmaris - Datca Peninsula

Jan   --   May                        Production of olive oil

March - April                        Collecting "çağlar" i.e. unripe but tasteful almonds. It is actually a way of  trimming. By taking away some almonds of every cluster, more energy will go the the left-overs.

March - April -May              Trimming almond- and olive trees.  Manuring the fruit trees. Honey production

April - May - June                Collecting  fresh herbs like  thyme,  sage and oregano. Honey-production(*)

August - September          Harvesting  almonds and preparing them for the market by peeling    

September                          Harvesting of fresh laurel-leaves. Peeling almonds fort he market

October-November            Preparing almonds for the market by peeling

November - December     Harvesting of olives. Pickling table olives.

(*) honey production starts in our destination earliest at mid March, continuing through June, then most of the imkers move to high mountains further east to collect nectarine for their bees there. After some good rainfall in fall imkers coming back to our destination have another month or one and a half for collecting nectarines.
